At Hope for the North, our goal is to expand access to quality healthcare in northern Ethiopia by delivering essential laboratory equipment and medical devices to the communities that need them most.
Why We Do This
Healthcare infrastructures in Northern Ethiopia are devastated by the recent war.
In the northern region of Ethiopia (in particular, the Tigray region), recent conflict has severely undermined the health system. As of mid-2021, a comprehensive survey found that only 3.6% of all health facilities (out of 1,007) were fully functional; none of the 741 health posts remained operational. Meanwhile, just 13.5% of hospitals and health centres were fully functional.
According to assessments by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), among 106 facilities they inspected between December 2020 and March 2021, nearly 70% had been looted, over 30% damaged, and only about 13% were functioning normally.
Many of the facilities that remain “functional” are operating well below pre-war capacity due to missing or destroyed medical devices, lack of power and water, and shortages of medical supplies.
Our Work
At Hope for the North, we believe rebuilding the health infrastructure in northern Ethiopia begins with restoring diagnostic capacity. We collect, refurbish, and ship essential laboratory equipment and medical devices to under-resourced clinics and hospitals across conflict-affected regions. By doing so, we:
Enable accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of diseases.
Support healthcare workers with the tools they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.
Help restore trust in the health system and give communities renewed access to quality care.
Our Vision
We envision a future where every healthcare facility in northern Ethiopia, regardless of how remote, has access to the tools needed for lifesaving diagnosis and care, where healthcare workers are empowered, and where patients receive timely, high-quality medical attention.
Join us in empowering care, one lab at a time!
